Start with Why by Simon Sinek

In May our book club read was about unleashing the power of purpose and we journeyed through the pages of Simon Sinek’s renowned book, “Start with Why.”

Our theme for the month was to improve our business plan and the book highlighted how starting with why helps achieve clarity, a sense of purpose and direction for the business.

These are our key takeaways..

1. Most companies and leaders start with the What, which are the products and services they offer. The Why, which is the purpose or belief that drives the company or leader, is more important than the What. The Why is what inspires people and creates loyalty.

2. People are drawn to leaders and companies who share their values and beliefs. Great leaders and companies are able to clearly articulate their Why and communicate it in a way that inspires others.

3. Starting with Why requires a deep understanding of oneself and one’s purpose. It requires leaders to be vulnerable, to take risks, and to trust their instincts.

4. Companies that focus too much on the rational and analytical aspects of their products or services are missing the emotional component that drives people to take action.

5. Leaders who start with Why are able to create a sense of belonging and connection with their followers. Also businesses that are successful in inspiring loyalty and advocacy among their followers/clients are able to create a connection rather than just a product or service. A clear and inspiring Why helps create this connection and inspires action.

6. Businesses that start with Why are able to attract and retain employees who share their values and beliefs

7. Great leaders and organisations are able to clearly articulate their Why, How and What. The Why is the purpose or belief that drives the business, the How is the actions the business takes to realize that purpose, and the What is the tangible results of those actions.

8. Businesses that don’t have a clear Why may be successful in the short term, but will struggle to maintain their success in the long term.

9. Sustaining the Why and maintaining focus on it requires ongoing commitment and vigilance. Sinek reminds us that challenges and changes will arise, but by consistently revisiting and reinforcing the “Why,” we stay true to our purpose and mission.

10. When uncovering our “Why,” doubts and resistance may arise. Sinek provides guidance on overcoming obstacles, embracing vulnerability, and persisting through setbacks to stay aligned with our purpose.
